High Tide Technologies Awarded U.S. Patent for SCADA Error Analysis and Remediation Technology
Nashville-Based Water Technology Company Receives Patent No. US 12,730,700 B2 for Remote Terminal Unit System
NASHVILLE, TN - September 8, 2026 - High Tide Technologies, LLC today announced the issuance of U.S. Patent No. 12,730,700 B2 for its Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) technology for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The patent, issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, covers the company's approach to error analysis, reporting, and automated remediation across distributed networks of industrial equipment.
The patented technology addresses a persistent challenge in water and wastewater operations: managing the wide variety of error types generated by large, geographically distributed networks of industrial equipment - including water pumps, lift stations, valves, and flow sensors - particularly as utilities expand into new service areas and integrate legacy equipment.
"As water utilities grow and take on new service areas, they inherit diverse equipment with unfamiliar error codes and communication protocols," said Justin Starr, President of High Tide Technologies. "This patent reflects our team's work to make that complexity manageable through automated error handling that keeps systems running and operators informed."
Key innovations covered by the patent include:
- Automated extraction and classification of error codes from RTU messages to identify error types and connect them to diagnostic analytics.
- Remediation workflows that automatically retry failed update processes with modified configurations.
- Error signature analysis that combines error codes with related contextual data to support root-cause diagnosis.
- Anomaly detection using models trained on historical error data.
- A cloud-based dashboard for visualizing, annotating, and managing both recognized and unrecognized errors across an entire RTU network.
The technology is purpose-built for cloud-based SCADA environments where a central system oversees hundreds of RTUs interfacing with industrial equipment across wide geographic areas - a scenario common in water and wastewater utility management.
The patent lists eight inventors, all based in Nashville: Justin Starr, Stephen Kemp, Bryan Mundie, Dave Mundie, Ian Parker Hodge, Eric Winton, Sarah Beckum, and Antonio Kincaid-Rivadeneyra. The application was filed June 28, 2024.
